Freedom-Woodbridge defeats Woodbridge 55-41, stays atop Cardinal District

If you haven’t been paying attention, the Freedom-Woodbridge girls are playing some pretty good ball down I-95. On Friday night, the Eagles got a 55-41 home win over rival Woodbridge, sweeping the season series and keeping Freedom atop the Cardinal District standings.

“Our district is what it has always been, there’s the heavy-hitters,” said Freedom Coach Darryl Overton, also the school’s state champion football coach. “We’ve got to be able to do all the little things to be ready for when the playoffs come.”

On Friday the Eagles (7-1, 10-7) got a big game out of Savannah Price, a junior forward who transferred from Brentsville District in the offseason. Price led the team with 21 points, finishing at the rim, controlling the damage Woodbridge’s tall front line could do, and connecting twice from three-point range.

Savannah Price has turned into a formidable inside-outside weapon for Freedom-Woodbridge.

“Savannah came and gave us an inside presence that can score inside, but a lot of people don’t know, she can shoot the three,” said Overton. “She has a great set shot as well, so she allows us to be productive inside and out…it helps spread the floor for the people who like to drive.”

Those people who like to drive were definitely productive as well. Junior Keilana Johnson added 11 points, mostly driving to the basket. Freshman Mariah Overton (seven points) and senior Kenneah DeGuzman (10 points) also got into the lane some as well, but did considerable damage from behind the arc. DeGuzman came off the bench to bury three three-pointers.

Freedom-Woodbridge got a nice lift from Kenneah DeGuzman, who buried three three-pointers.

On defense the entire Freedom team was often able to trap Woodbridge’s ball-handlers successfully, causing turnovers. The Eagles limited the Vikings to 30% shooting on the evening, and often forced the visitors to take difficult shots. Woodbridge’s Gabby Jackson (16 points), made some of those tough shots, and the tall Vikings were able to crash the offensive boards, but it wasn’t enough.

Freshman Maia Melendez added 10 points for Woodbridge (3-4, 8-8), while senior center Terrell Phillips had 17 rebounds.
