Boys Player of the Week (1/11-1/17) is Darius Bivins, O’Connell

People are still talking about Bivins’ performance against Bishop Ireton last week. Bivins scored 33 points–20 in the fourth quarter alone–as O’Connell rallied to defeat the Cardinals in WCAC play.

Bivins, a Division I-caliber, highly sought-after senior point guard, has a smooth stop-and-go flow to his offensive game as he directs offense. He’s perfectly content to distribute to O’Connell’s other talented players, but when it’s time to take over he does. We’re not sure we’ve seen a high-level basketball game where someone took over quite like Bivins did last Thursday.

He riddled Ireton with quick drives to the basket from beyond the arc, and when he wasn’t doing that, he was hitting from outside.

O’Connell is having a great season. Two days before the Ireton win, the Knights defeated DeMatha on the road. In that one Corey Dixon was the offensive catalyst, but we were impressed with Bivins’ defense, which is top-notch.

Congrats to Darius and O’Connell!
