Jeremy Roach
Paul VI's Jeremy Roach was the most dominant freshman in the area this year.

2016-2017 All-NOVA boys freshman team

First team All-Nova Freshmen

Tyler Savage, John Champe–Averaged almost ten points a game as Champe’s second-leading scorer behind Dom Fragala. Athletic forward who was frequently asked to guard bigger players and was often up to the task. Has weak-side shot blocking skills and can get up and down the floor well. Scored a season-high 21 points in a loss to Lake Braddock, adding eight rebounds, five assists and several key blocks. Hudl highlights link.

Jeremy Roach, Paul VI–Averaged 11 points a game and stepped right in as a starter for the powerful Panthers. Composed and plays beyond his years on the court knowing when to defer and when to step up. Athletic and quick. Can handle the ball, attack the rim and hit an occasional three-pointer. Had 26 points in a loss to Bishop Loughlin at Slam Dunk to the Beach in December. Already drawing major DI interest.

Josiah Freeman, Paul VI–Another one of the Panthers’ talented freshmen, the young shooting guard played important minutes coming off the bench, averaging six points a game. Despite not playing in all his team’s games totaled 28 threes on the year, including five in a win over Bishop Ireton.

Chase Ackerman, Fairfax–Ackerman logged major minutes for a Rebels team that got more dangerous as the season progressed. Tall post player converting to wing. Very composed and cerebral, can hit the jumper and rebound. Understands the game.

“Chase had an excellent season for us this year. He showed great versatility for us being able to play both guard and forward with his ‘unfreshman-like’ athletic ability and strength, but the thing that impressed me most about Chase is he didn’t carry himself like a freshman. He had the swagger of someone who had been playing varsity basketball for years. We saw this in the first game of the year when he calmly hit a three-pointer in the last minute of his first career game to tie it up. I have expectations for Chase as he continues to develop from a post growing up into a wing player.”

–Fairfax coach Mike Barbee

Will Shin, Briar Woods–One of several freshmen who played major minutes for a very young Briar Woods team. Third-leading scorer for the Falcons at ten points a game. A shooter who scored 27 points in a loss to Champe and hit seven three-pointers in a loss to Tuscarora. Hit almost 80% from the free throw line and if he finds a way to get there more could be almost unstoppable as an upper-classman. Hudl highlights link.
