Strong second half powers Flint Hill over St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes

Flint Hill looked like a completely different team after halftime in its ISL A battle with St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes Wednesday night.

Tied at 18 at the intermission, the Huskies doubled up the host Saints the rest of the way to notch the road victory, 52-35.

“I said [at halftime] let’s take advantage of what [defense] they’re playing,” said Flint Hill coach Jody Patrick. “We didn’t attack as much in the first half, either, that was the difference in the second half–we attacked more, we went downhill more instead of going side-to-side.”

The Huskies, who shot 30% from the field in the first half and 46% in the second, were buoyed by both young and experienced players up and down their roster.

Flint Hill senior Nicole Kladakis led the Huskies scoring attack with 19 points.

Senior forward Nicole Kladakis had 12 of her 19 points after the break, finishing well at the basket. Off the bench junior Mariella Silvia had nine points, and freshman Raigan McCalla had seven points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Junior Lyndsey Costigan also was strong on the boards and had five assists. McCalla and Costigan were frequently able to grab rebounds and trigger fast breaks down the court with their passing.

“When we move the ball like we did tonight, make the extra pass…they start to see that it works,” Patrick said. “We probably had our best passing night [of the season] tonight.”

Dynamic Huskies freshman Raigan McCalla had a fantastic all-around game.

Senior point guard Kelli Giuliani added eight points for the Huskies (3-1, 5-4), who have to get right back at it tomorrow night with another league game, versus Madeira.

St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (1-1, 3-4) got nice balanced contributions from its players, but could not match the deeper Huskies once the tempo increased in the second half. Sophomore forward Belle Akeredolu led the way for the Saints with 13 points, while junior Nya Mason had eight points, all in the first half. Senior Emmy Pascal did a great job on the boards, gathering 12 rebounds on the evening.
