Ireton girls defeat Episcopal, advance to VISAA semis

Nine Bishop Ireton players scored as the Cardinals overwhelmed Episcopal physically in a VISAA quarterfinal Wednesday night, 57-41.

Bishop Ireton’s length and strength across the board proved too much for Episcopal to overcome. The host Cardinals’ aggressive defense forced numerous turnovers, and the WCAC school enjoyed a 39-23 advantage on the boards.

Olivia Brooks and Kennedy Clifton did the most damage, accounting for 21 points and 18 rebounds between them. Fellow sophomore Lauren Mingo added nine points and five rebounds, while junior Laila Jewett contributed seven points.

Ireton sophomore Olivia Brooks
Ireton sophomore Olivia Brooks (12 points, eight rebounds) hurt the Maroon all game down low.

The game was close early on, as Episcopal used four first half three-pointers to keep it tight. But a 21-17 Ireton lead in the second quarter was extended to double-digits by halftime as the Cards forced bad passes and were able to get into transition and score.

The Cardinals (14-16) advance to face Paul VI in the VISAA semis at Richard Bland College on Friday. The season concluded for Episcopal (14-11), which had three players score eight points in the defeat.
