Seahawks Head Coach Mike Desmond says it will be a challenge to get through a wide-open Class 6 and back to the state title game this season.

Defending state champ South Lakes has a fun night, then gears up for title defense

On Saturday night, the defending VHSL Class 6 boys state champion South Lakes Seahawks kicked off their season with some fun, having a “Midnight Madness”-type event called “Late Nite at the Byrd.” Before the event there was some business to attend to, as the team scrimmaged Potomac Falls. After the event, which included a dunk and three-point contest, games, and even an autograph session for kids, it was back to business once more.

That business is to duplicate some part, or all, of last year’s accomplishments: a district title, a regional title, and then ultimately, a state title.

“We have a long way to go, but, it’s early,” said Seahawks Coach Mike Desmond. We still have two weeks to prepare for our first game.”

Saturday night was the Reston community and South Lakes just enjoying the moment. Michigan State signee Jordan Scott won the three-point contest, narrowly beating out fellow senior Ruby Karandikar, a sharpshooter on the girls team. Scott also went head-to-head with teammate Merrick Rillstone in the dunk contest–we can’t even remember who won that, but it was fun to watch.

The Seahawks have Scott, Rillstone, and Toshiki Elston back, but other than that, there’s not a ton of varsity experience. To go back-to-back in Richmond, others will have to step up. That much is certain, though we expect Scott to kick his already-formidable game up another notch.

Hear what Scott and Desmond have to say about that below. Desmond also was kind enough to (off the top of his head) mention some of the other teams in Class 6 this season that could also make a run to a state title.
