6D Regional First Round: Madison 47, Yorktown 37

Senior Katy Sharon scored 13 points, sophomore Caroline Trotter had 11, and junior Sarah Conforti ripped down 12 rebounds as the Warhawks (15-10) won their first round regional game against visiting Yorktown Tuesday night, 47-37.

Individual performances were key, but as usual team defense won the day for Kirsten Stone’s team. After giving up 12 points in the first quarter Madison settled in and limited the Patriots to 15 total points the next two quarters. When Yorktown junior guard Liz Shean buried a jumper to tie the game at 35 with just under four minutes left in the game, the Warhawks defense dug in once more, only allowing the Patriots two more points the rest of the way.

Shean (20 points) and fellow junior Margaret Shipley accounted for 31 of Yorktown’s 37 total points. The Warhawks did a much better job limiting both after the first quarter, however. Madison advances to face Osbourn Park on the road tonight in a 6D quarterfinal.
