West Springfield is known for its fantastic team defense but after a quarter last night the Spartans trailed 14-12 to a game Centreville team. 14 points may not seem like a lot, but it is to anyone used to watching the Spartans. They’re known for gutting out wins in the 40’s, 30’s and even the 20’s.
After that first quarter things reverted back to normal, however. The Spartans (1-0) only gave up 17 total points in the next three quarters and got the victory, 48-31.
On offense Billy Gibson’s team was powered by junior Lexi White and sophomore McKenzie Matheny. White, a forward who can play point guard, scored 14 points and led her team in rebounds and assists. Often her passes were to Matheny down low. Matheny, a post player who plays bigger than she is because of her wingspan, had 19 points. Most of those were in the paint.
Centreville (0-2) played very well in spurts, but the young Wildcats could not topple the defending Patriot District champions. Junior forward Kaya Squirewell had a nice game with nine points and 12 rebounds, while senior guard Jada Squirewell added eight points off the bench for the Wildcats.
