Senior guards Max Gieseman and Anthony Reyes combined for 38 points to lead Washington-Liberty (2-0) to a 54-49 victory over T.C. Williams.
The Generals took the lead in the first quarter and would not relinquish it again. Washington-Liberty took a 17-10 lead early in the second quarter, forcing a Titans timeout. T.C. Williams battled back to make it 19-17 but could not forge ahead. The Titans cut it to 36-35 late in the third but again could not take the lead. They cut it to 49-47 on a TJ Horton three-pointer late however got no closer as the Generals made enough free throws down the stretch to hold on.
Plus, the Generals took care of the ball down the stretch. Washington-Liberty’s talented triumvirate of guards, Gieseman, Reyes, and junior Marino Dias, worked the ball around the T.C. trap expertly. Senior forward William Reynolds was key, pulling down nine boards as the Generals out-rebounded the Titans on the night.
“We came out and played well,” Generals veteran Head Coach Bobby Dobson said after the game. “Obviously they’re a tough team over here at T.C., but our kids stepped up to the game. I got a senior club, we’ve played in some wars–we have a tough team. We got three guards that are pretty good and I’ll stack ’em up against anybody. Our defense and rebounding were key tonight.”
Horton had 12 for the Titans while dynamic sophomore guard Michael Henderson Jr. played the whole game save for the first two minutes, leading the Titans (1-1) with 14 points and four assists.
