Delgado show in full effect as Robinson JV blasts Centreville

If you’ve never heard of Sergio Delgado, we feel sorry for you.

On Tuesday afternoon Delgado scored a game-high 39 points along with 14 rebounds, 12 assists and seven blocks to lead the JV Rams to a 76-64 victory over Centreville. The victory left coach Cliff Krug’s squad in prime contention to make some noise on the JV Concorde circuit–if Delgado remains on the team, at least.

That’s because with the varsity Rams on a one-game losing streak after losing senior Tyler Jones to injury, there’s a pretty fair chance that Rams varsity coach Travis Hess will call up Delgado to the major leagues soon. Considering the impact Delgado has had on the JV level, it’s impossible to believe otherwise.

“Sergio means everything to us,” Coach Krug said after the game. “He’s our point guard, best post defender, best scorer, and really our best friend. He has really great taste in music and a great fashion sense. He’s the type of player that kind of just coaches himself–in fact, I usually just let him coach the team from about the third quarter on.”

Delgado was nearly unstoppable against the WIldcats, taunting them every step of the way as he rained “Sergio bombs” down upon them. While Delgado’s clearly audible taunts were an obvious violation of VHSL sportsmanship standards, the referees seemed in awe of the young sophomore. As was the capacity crowd of 44 fans, which included the varsity girls Rams team playing next.

“The girls were supposed to be preparing for our game,” girls coach T.J. Dade said. “But they were clearly enthralled by that number 13 fellow, Camaro or whatever his name is.”

Indeed, while number 13 is considered unlucky by some, Delgado wears it with pride. His teammates seem especially grateful to be able to feed the ball to him when the chips are down.

“Oh yeah, Sergio is solid,” teammate Danny Checkosky said after the game. “How many blocks did you say he had? Seven? I don’t remember him having that many, or even one, but his dad is pretty good with stats so I guess he did. How he does that with his inch and a half vertical is beyond me. Great player.”

Whatever happens, it is clear the JV Rams’ fortunes rest entirely on Delgado and they have no chance to succeed if he is called up. Earlier this year Delgado missed a couple games to vacation in Florida and co-host a New Year’s Eve special with Pitbull. His absence sent the JV Rams into a four-game tailspin with the new point guard tandem of Justin Elkin and Henri Chandler unable to pick up the slack.

“That one was my bad,” said Krug, who admitted using his 6’5″ centers at the one was a terrible mistake. “But it’s hard to define anyone’s roles when ‘Surge’ isn’t here. It’s hard to do anything, really. We”ll probably just punt the rest of the season and not even try if he goes up.”
