Anthony Reyes (left) was a big reason for Washington-Lee's success this year. The sophomore guard averaged over 15 points a game.

2017-2018 All-NOVA sophomore boys teams

FIRST TEAM

Jeremy Roach, Paul VI–After a fantastic freshman year athletic point guard took another step up. Led PVI in scoring at over 15 points a game and exploded for 32 against DeMatha in a key midseason win. Was good for a couple threes a game but also continued to display an excellent mid-range game and attack the rim. Hits about 75% of his free throws and has become a better defender, passer, and ball-handler in the last year. One of the top recruits nationally in the class of 2020.

Jared Clawson, Edison–Lightning-quick point guard always seemed to be able to score right out of the gate for the 21-win Eagles. Averaged over 12 points a game and was often best against tougher competition. Hit 50 three-pointers on the year and hit his free throws at around an 80% clip. A constant threat to get a steal on defense and take it coast-to-coast.

Anthony Reyes, Washington-Lee–Was solid last year, but took a huge step up this year to score consistently in double figures. Might possibly win a region-wide “most improved” award if there was one. Like backcourt mate Chris Ozgo was comfortable with the ball or moving without it. A very good ball-handler and patient waiting for an opportunity to attack the rim, Reyes was also perfectly content to wait for the ball at the three-point line when circumstances dictated it. Most noticeable impact was when he was running hot on offense but also a crafty defender.

Tymu Chenery, Episcopal–Transfer from Dunbar (MD) immediately made an impact and finished first team all-IAC. 6’6″ small forward with ability to score inside and out and has the length and tenacity to be a shut-down defender. Makes an impact on the glass despite slender frame. Could very well be dominant by his senior year. Attended Villanova’s Midnight Madness last year.

Tyler Savage, Champe–Became much stronger and imposing physically this year after holding his own down low as a freshman last year. Guard-forward averaged around 16 a game for the Knights. Still developing as a shooter but incredibly explosive going to the hole and even more of a force now on the boards. Often physically dominant even as an underclassman. More consistency and range will make him a star.

SECOND TEAM

Torrence “TJ” Horton, Mount Vernon–Small forward with great length announced himself in a major way this season, averaging well into double figures and leading Mount Vernon in scoring. Can alter games inside as well as score from outside. Scored 22 points to help lead the Majors to an upset road win over Braddock at regionals and hit eight three-pointers and 54 points total combined in a win over T.C. and loss to West Potomac. Capable of 20 a game once he figures out how to get to the line more as he’s already a solid free throw shooter.

Xavier Lipscomb, Saint Stephen’s & St. Agnes–Guard with decent size quietly went about his business making an impact on one of the more talented rosters in the area. Good passer averaged around 11 points a game and contributed in just about all facets of the game. Improvement as year went on was noticeable factor in team’s better overall play. Quick and smart, knows how to get to the line and is a fantastic free throw shooter (81%). Really will be crucial for the Saints next year with Dom Bailey gone.

Josh Abtew, Fairfax–No one got more out of its sophomore class this year than the Rebels, who also have Chase Ackerman and Ricky Peters perfectly deserving of making this list. Abtew led the team in scoring and showed fearlessness in taking the big shot when necessary. Guard has great range and averaged around a couple made threes a game, but also displayed great quickness and athleticism attacking the rim. A good defender, which is mandatory to play in Coach Mike Barbee’s program.

Fairfax's Josh Abtew had a fantastic sophomore season and is part of a great Rebels sophomore class.

Josiah Freeman, Paul VI–Could easily be first team but stats are limited being on the best team in NOVA. Would likely average 20 a game right now at a public school. Shooting guard impressed at Metro Challenge this weekend, absolutely pouring in points against top-notch competition. Very good shooter with size, which means guaranteed Division I prospect. Getting stronger physically and better on the defensive end.

Isaiah Folkes, Stonewall Jackson–Guard is an excellent ball-handler who knows how to play up-tempo and attack gaps in the defense. Averaged almost 20 points a game the last four games of the season on a talented roster with a great senior class. Range continues to expand. Will have opportunity to really flourish as a leader the next couple years.

NOTE: We did not include Virginia Academy until late in the year, but all indications are 2020 VA guard Amir Nesbitt should and would have been included first team.

HONORABLE MENTION–Matt Anderson (Loudoun County), Will Shin (Briar Woods), Aidan Clark (Briar Woods), Cam Hatcher (Briar Woods), Caron Forde (Freedom-Woodbridge), D.J. Slaughter (John Paul the Great), Jack Dolan (Hylton), Coretez Lewis (Forest Park), Landon Hawes (Potomac Falls), Joseph Dagbe (South Lakes), Tre Vasiliadis (Langley), Brock Redman (Woodgrove), Aidan Stroup (Yorktown), Lysander Rehnstrom (Herndon), Garrett Johnson (Oakton), Carter Svenson (Battlefield), Ethan Wilson (Osbourn Park), Daniel Peterson (Hayfield), Xa’Vian Myles (South County), Cody Kellem (South County), Chase Ackerman (Fairfax), Ricky Peters (Fairfax), Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax), Tanner LaPlante (Robinson), Lance Johnson (Freedom-South Riding), Michael Healy (Tuscarora), Isaiah Rhodes (Stone Bridge), Caleb Botts (Falls Church), Alex Yu (Thomas Jefferson), Trent Dawson (Loudoun Valley), Clyde Volker (Loudoun Valley), Max Mancuso (Dominion), Simon Weeren (Riverside), Jayden Hickey (Dominion), Jahmal Banks (O’Connell), Jordan Beckett (Bishop Ireton), Dowar Jioklow (Flint Hill), Andre Screen (St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes), Lamumba Howard (St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes)
